Mara Betancourt Coker, director of language acquisition at the Keller Independent School District, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in bilingual education.

Backed by nearly 25 years of professional experience, Ms. Betancourt Coker has served as the director of language acquisition at the Keller Independent School District. In this position, she oversees teacher training and supervises all English as a second language (ESL) teachers and specialists. Ms. Betancourt Coker directly runs the bilingual programs for Spanish and Vietnamese speakers in her district while supporting ESL programs for 65 other languages. Prior to this, she contributed as campus administrator, bilingual specialist, bilingual facilitator, summer intervention program principal and assistant principal at Keller Independent School District. Ms. Betancourt has showcased her expertise in the role of adjunct professor at The University of Texas at Arlington’s College of Education. She gained experience in bilingual education as a volunteer third- and fourth-grade teacher at Whitley Road Elementary School.

Ms. Betancourt Coker’s achievements have been supported by a solid academic foundation. She obtained a Bachelor of Arts in international politics, economics and finance from the Universidad de las Américas in her home country of Mexico. After immigrating to the United States with her husband, Ms. Betancourt Coker earned a master’s degree in educational leadership and policy studies at The University of Texas at Arlington in 2011. Further cementing her credentials, she has been certified as a Texas educator, a principal for early childhood to high school, and a bilingual generalist in Spanish for early childhood to middle school. Ms. Betancourt Coker’s work was celebrated when she was named Assistant Principal of the Year by the Texas Elementary Principals and Supervisors Association in 2015. She credits her success to the support of her exceptional colleagues.

Beyond her career, Ms. Betancourt Coker is a devoted wife and mother to one child. She enjoys reading, traveling, visiting Mexico and attending group workout sessions. Looking ahead, Ms. Betancourt Coker has embraced the ambitious goal of returning to higher education to pursue a doctorate. Her ultimate goal is to become a tenured faculty member at a university, allowing her to educate and inspire the next generation of teachers.
