Katharina Stapelmann, associate professor at North Carolina State University, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in academia.

With nearly a decade of experience, Ms. Stapelmann has built a successful career in academia, specializing in plasma engineering. She currently excels as an associate professor in nuclear engineering at North Carolina State University, a role she has held since 2023. In this position, she focuses on teaching and research, covering graduate courses on biomedical applications of plasma and industrial plasma processing, as well as plasma diagnostics and the interaction of plasma with various substrates. Her previous roles include assistant professor at North Carolina State University from 2017 to 2023, junior professor at Ruhr University Bochum, AG Applied Plasma Technology in Biomedicine from 2015 to 2017, scientific associate at Ruhr University Bochum, Institute for General Electrical Engineering and Plasma Technology from 2009 to 2015, and trainee at JRC from 2007 to 2008.

Ms. Stapelmann has contributed to the field through several publications, including co-authoring “Implications of electron heating and non-uniformities in a VHF-CCP for sterilization of medical instruments” in Plasma Sources Science and Technology and “A H2 very high frequency capacitively coupled plasma inactivates glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GapDH) more efficiently than UV photons and heat combined” in Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics. Her work also includes “Utilization of low-pressure plasma to inactivate bacterial spores on stainless steel screws” in Astrobiology, and “Characterization of a low-pressure inductively coupled plasma discharge sustained in Ar/O2/N2 ternary mixtures and evaluation of its effect on erosion of biological samples” in Plasma Processes and Polymers. She has also co-authored “Elimination of pathogenic biological residuals by means of low-pressure inductively coupled plasma discharges” in Industrial Plasma Technology: Applications from Environmental to Energy Technologies, and “On the application of inductively coupled plasma discharges sustained in Ar/O2/N2 ternary mixture for sterilization and decontamination of medical instruments” in Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics.

She holds memberships with the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, the American Vacuum Society, the American Physical Society, the International Society for Plasma Medicine, and the Honor Society. She serves on the Board of Trustees for the National Center of Plasma Medicine in Germany and is a member of the Advisory Committee for the Department of Energy Fusion Energy Sciences. In light of her impressive undertakings, she was honored with the Early Career Award in Plasma Medicine from the International Society of Plasma Medicine in 2022. She was also recognized as a Goodnight Early Career Innovator by North Carolina State University, invited to the National Academy of Engineering Frontiers of Engineering Symposium, and received a grant from the National Institutes of Health. Laying a solid educational foundation, she earned a Master of Science in electrical engineering and information technology from Ruhr University Bochum in 2009 and a PhD in electrical engineering from Ruhr University Bochum in 2013. She also holds a certification from the Mercator Fellowship. She attributes her success to her ability to think outside the box and her determination to focus on her goals while tuning out negativity.
