John Elie Etienne PhD, EdD, academic dean at St. Johns River State College, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in academia.

With nearly two and a half decades of experience, Mr. Etienne has built a successful career in academia. He currently serves as the academic dean at St. Johns River State College, a position he has held since 2023. Additionally, he has been the computer education director at the same institution since 2016. His prior experience includes serving as an adjunct professor at the School of Sciences and Technology at Georgia Gwinnett College from 2011 to 2016 and as program director of computer information systems at Georgia Piedmont Technical College, formerly DeKalb Technical College, from 2001 to 2016.

Mr. Etienne is an active member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, the world’s largest professional association dedicated to advancing technology for the benefit of humanity. It focuses on electrical, electronics, and computer engineering and related disciplines, including aerospace, biomedical engineering, telecommunications, and robotics. He is also a member of the Association for Computing Machinery, the world’s largest and most prestigious organization dedicated to computing professionals. The organization publishes leading journals, organizes major conferences, and develops resources such as curricula and professional certifications. He also dedicates his time to mentoring students in public schools and playing music at his local church. He laid a strong foundation for his success by earning a Bachelor of Science in electrical and electronics engineering from the University of Central Florida in 1989, a Master of Science in information technology from Georgia State University in 1995, a PhD in information systems from Nova Southeastern University in 2007, and a Doctor of Education in educational leadership and administration from Walden University in 2012.

Reflecting on his career, Dr. Etienne was inspired to pursue education after initially working as an electrical engineer. His journey began when he started substituting in high schools, where he quickly realized the fulfillment that teaching brought him. This experience motivated him to obtain his certification and become a math teacher, specializing in math and science. Recognizing the importance of combining his passion for science with education, he decided to further his studies and continue advancing in the field. He takes great pride in conducting research in computer science for his institution and overseeing the day-to-day operations of three departments. He attributes his success to his dedication to learning, resilience, and perseverance. 

In the coming years, Dr. Etienne aims to retire with recognition, elevating both his school and the profession as a whole. He is considering transitioning into a part-time role, planning to reduce his workload rather than fully retire This shift will allow him to stay engaged in his profession while enjoying a more flexible schedule. He also says that in today’s era of artificial intelligence, he remains committed to a learn-and-grow mentality, actively planning to attend training sessions to explore new tools and integrate AI into his work. He advises aspiring professionals to embrace consistency in their actions and aspirations, as it is key to long-term success. He emphasizes that his commitment to continuous learning, developed over years in both industry and education, enabled him to navigate smooth transitions and achieve lasting growth in his career.
