Alan H. McGowan, Adjunct Faculty Member at The New School, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in environmental science education.

An accomplished educator, editor, and advocate for environmental science with decades of experience to his credit, Mr. McGowan has excelled as an adjunct faculty member with The New School in New York since 2015. Likewise, he has been active as the executive editor for Environment: Science and Policy for Sustainable Development since 1974. In these positions, Mr. McGowan has aided in bridging the gap between the scientific community and the general public, particularly through the aforementioned magazine’s coverage of critical environmental topics.

Mr. McGowan embarked upon his professional path at Yale University, from which he graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering in mechanical engineering in 1957. After beginning his career as an engineer, he embraced his passion for teaching and worked for ten years as a teacher of environmental education at the high school level. Soon thereafter, Mr. McGowan was recruited by Washington University, where he collaborated with renowned environmentalist Barry Commoner on various environmental issues, further cementing his commitment to the advancement of environmental science.

Between 1974 and 1994, Mr. McGowan served as the president of the Scientists’ Institute for Public Information (SIPI), a tenure he cites among the highlights of his career. Under his leadership, SIPI became a vital link between scientists and the media, enhancing the public’s understanding of science through radio and television. Moreover, Mr. McGowan was appointed as an associate professor at The New School in New York City from 2009 to 2015, during which time he was distinguished as the chair of the interdisciplinary science and environmental studies programs.

Beyond his primary responsibilities, Mr. McGowan has contributed as a board member of the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences (BIOS) since 1989 and a participant in the Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs from 2005 to 2010. A member of the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR), he was likewise recruited to the board of the Metcalf Institute for Marine and Environmental Reporting and the advisory board member of the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Scientists at Arizona State University. Having provided his unique expertise to over 100 articles published in scientific journals, Mr. McGowan most recently authored “The Political Activism of Anthropologist Franz Boas, Citizen Scientist” in 2024, with another book, “Life and Death in the Anthropocene,” in progress and scheduled for completion in the coming years.

Throughout his career, Mr. McGowan has been honored on a number of occasions. In 1968, he was presented with a Teaching Award from the American Physics Society (APS). He was subsequently celebrated as a Top Science and Technical Expert by the International Association of Top Professionals in 2019. Furthermore, Mr. McGowan has been notably recognized a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).

Mr. McGowan has attributed his success to his hard work and the opportunities he has had to encounter interesting and influential individuals. Looking toward the future, he hopes to continue to advocate for scientific leaders to address the growing amount of science denial in society. In addition to this goal, Mr. McGowan aims to further cement his legacy as an author and an educator at The New School while witnessing the burgeoning careers of his children.
