Catherine Burns, PhD, mathematics, business, and accounting educator at Cleveland ISD, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in academia.

With over two and a half decades of experience, Dr. Burns has established a successful career in academia, specializing in education and research. She currently excels as an educator in mathematics, business, and accounting at Cleveland ISD, a role she has held since 2023. Prior to this, she worked as a substitute teacher with the New Caney Independent School District from 2009 to 2017, a tax researcher with Northcentral University from 2015 to 2019, and an algebra I, II, geometry, and path courses teacher with Dekaney High School from 2014 to 2015. She also served as adjunct accounting faculty with Lone Star College from 2009 to 2014, adjunct faculty for developmental math with San Jacinto College in 2009, and an algebra I, II, and III, geometry, and pre-calculus teacher with Huntsville Independent School District from 2007 to 2008. Additionally, she worked as an algebra I teacher and in-school suspension officer with Klein Oak High School from 2006 to 2007, an algebra I, II, geometry teacher, and SAT prep instructor with Juan B. Galaviz Charter School from 2005 to 2006, and adjunct accounting faculty with North Harris College from 2002 to 2005. Her early career included roles as adjunct faculty for accounting principles I with San Jacinto College in 2002 and as a teaching and research assistant with the University of Houston from 1998 to 2001.

Dr. Burns also has extensive experience in tax preparation, having worked with Clayborn Enterprises in 2017 as a tax preparer with an international focus at Brenner & Elsea-Mandojana LLC from 2013 to 2014, a federal accounts bookkeeper with Splendora Independent School District from 2009 to 2011, and as a tax preparer with Jackson Hewitt Tax Service Inc. from 2009 to 2010. Laying a solid foundation for her successes, she earned a Bachelor of Arts in mathematics from the University of Houston, a Master of Business Administration in finance from the University of Houston, a master’s degree in accountancy from the University of Houston, and a PhD at Northcentral University in 2019. She is currently pursuing a Certified Public Accountant certification. She has also earned several certifications, including the Foundations of Leadership Certificate from The National Society of Leadership and Success in 2021, certified classroom teacher in business education and mathematics for grades 6-12 by the State Board of Education, and holds an Endorsed Internal Auditor Program Certificate from the University of Houston. Additionally, she has completed the Online Teaching Certificate Program from Lone Star Community College System, is a certified QuickBooks ProAdvisor, and has completed the Tax Training Program with Jackson Hewitt Tax Services, Inc.

Throughout her career, Dr. Burns has contributed to various articles and professional journals. She has held memberships with multiple institutions, including Delta Mu Delta since 2018, the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants from 2016 to 2019, the Institute of Internal Auditors, the Accounting Society at the University of Houston, and the Beta Alpha Psi Honor Society. She is also a donor to the National Shrine of Saint Jude. In recognition of her impressive contributions to the field, she has received several awards, including the Outstanding Coach Award from the Accounting Society, scholarship grants, an honorable mention in the Manuscript Contest by Beta Alpha Psi, and the Outstanding Member Award from the Accounting Society at the University of Houston. She was also recognized as an Outstanding Pledge by Beta Alpha Psi and received the Student Achievement Award from the Federation of Schools of Accountancy. She attributes her success to her faith and her mother, who taught her that she can achieve anything if she puts her mind to it. Looking to the future, she plans to continue teaching and conduct further research. Her advice to aspiring professionals is to persist in pursuing their dreams, even when faced with challenges, and to never give up.
