Roy H. Ruby, EdD, retired interim president at Mississippi State University, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in academia and student affairs.

With over four decades of experience to his credit, Dr. Ruby has excelled in academia and student relations. He currently serves as the vice president for student affairs emeritus at Mississippi State University, a role he stepped into after retiring as interim president at the same university in 2009.  His notable tenure at the university includes serving as dean of college education from 2002 to 2004, vice president of student affairs from 1985 to 2002, dean of student administrative services from 1981 to 1985, assistant to vice president of student affairs from 1978 to 1981, and director of the Jackson Branch of Mississippi State University from 1974 to 1978. His earlier roles include associate dean of student development in 1974, assistant dean of student development from 1971 to 1974, acting dean of students in 1970, acting dean of men from 1969 to 1970 and 1967 to 1969, coordinator of student activities from 1966 to 1967, and program director of University Union from 1964 to 1966. Additionally, he served in the U.S. Army and U.S. Army Reserve, retiring as a major in 1963. 

Prior to these accomplishments, he pursued an education at Mississippi State University, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in political science in 1961. He went on to earn a Master of Arts in political science in 1966, followed by a Doctor of Education in 1973, both from the same institution. He has maintained memberships with various organizations throughout his career, including the Southern Association for College Student Affairs, the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators, and the Military Officers Association of America, as well as Pi Delta Epsilon, Phi Alpha Theta, Phi Kappa Phi and Sigma Chi. Outside of his profession, he dedicates his time as a Sunday school teacher and member of several committees, including the finance committee, at the United Methodist Church. He was a trustee at Starkville Separate Municipal School District from 1980 to 1984, and president of the Starkville Separate Municipal School District in 1983. 

Reflecting on his career, Dr. Ruby takes great pride in being appointed as the interim president at Mississippi State University, which he sees as a recognition of his expertise and leadership skills. In light of his impressive undertakings, he was also named National Alumnus of the Year by Mississippi State University in 2010, the 2002 Alumnus of the Year by the Army ROTC Program at Mississippi State University in 2002, and given honors by Rotary International. Additionally, during his tenure with the university, his commitment to the division spanned 17 years under the leadership of four different presidents and helped establish the student affairs master’s program.

Dr. Ruby attributes his success to the exceptional teamwork and support provided by the staff at Mississippi State University. He recognizes the hard work and dedication of these individuals, who always went above and beyond to fulfill their responsibilities. Outside of the professional realm, he enjoys giving after-dinner talks, supporting Mississippi State University athletics, and learning about Civil War history.
