Robert E. Ulanowicz, courtesy professor at the University of Florida, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in academia, chemical engineering, and ecosystems.
With nearly five and a half decades of experience, Dr. Ulanowicz excels in academia, specializing in chemical engineering and ecosystems. He is currently a courtesy professor for the biology department at the University of Florida, a role he has held since his retirement in 2009. The honorary position serves as a facilitator for him to continue a connection with an institution in order to publish papers and maintain a professional relationship with the academic community. Additionally, he was a member of Friends of Complejidad from 2002 to 2011, a professor emeritus at the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science from 2008 to 2010, and a professor at the University of Maryland Center of Environmental Science from 1980 to 2008. Additionally, he was an associate professor at the University of Maryland Center of Environmental Science from 1974 to 1980 and a research assistant professor at the Chesapeake Biological Laboratory of the University of Maryland’s Natural Resources Institute from 1970 to 1974. Prior to his professional accomplishments, he pursued an education at The Johns Hopkins University, earning a Bachelor of Science in 1964, followed by a PhD from the same institution in 1968.
With over 200 refereed journal publications, Dr. Ulanowicz specializes in ecological networks, conceptualizing ecosystems as networks of predator-prey interactions. His research focuses on the mathematical characterization of these networks, providing insights into ecosystem organization and metabolic processes. His written works include “The First Incarnation: Hope in Reality,” “A Third Window: Natural Life Beyond Newton and Darwin,” “Ecology, the Ascendent Perspective (Complexity in Ecological Systems),” and “Growth and Development: Ecosystems Phenomenology.” He has also presented before King Carl XVI Gustaf at the Royal Seminar of the Baltic Sea Science Conference in Stockholm in 2001 and served as a keynote speaker at the Crafoord Seminar hosted by the Swedish Royal Academy of Science in Stockholm in 1987. In light of his impressive undertakings, he was awarded the Ilya Prigogine Medal in 2007 to honor his contributions to the field of ecological systems and complex systems research. Reflecting on his career, he says his passion for environmental systems was ignited by his love for the outdoors and an experience camping while on a kayak trip on Florida’s northern St. John’s River. Currently, his latest book, “The First Incarnation: Hope in Reality,” dealing with a new ecological connection between science and religion, is available from Xulon Press or Amazon.
