John Hubbel Weiss, PhD, associate professor emeritus at Cornell University, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in academia and political history.

With over four and a half decades of experience, Dr. Weiss has distinguished himself in the field of academia, specializing in contemporary European history, French history, social history of technology, and political history. Additionally, he is well-versed in contemporary political history, military history, contemporary European history, the history of humanitarianism and human rights’ dark war, and anti-genocide work. He is currently an associate professor emeritus at Cornell University, a role he has held since 2019. He was also an associate professor for the history department at Cornell University from 1974 to 2019, a research associate at Harvard University, Cambridge, from 1970 to 1972, and a teaching fellow in the history department of Harvard University. 

Dr. Weiss also served as the director of the Institute for European Studies at Cornell University for three terms, a visiting scholar at various universities, including Princeton University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales in Paris, France, Korea University, University in Tuzla, Bosnia, and the National Defense University College of International Security Affairs in Washington DC. He is also a member of Warrior Writers, a Princeton University Alumni, a member of Rome Free Academy’s alumni association, and The International Association of Genocide Scholars. Additionally, he was active in service in the U.S. Army and holds a bachelor’s degree in international studies from Princeton University and a PhD from Harvard University. 

Civically, Dr. Weiss coordinated various protest and fundraising activities during the war and genocide in Bosnia from 1992 to 1995, providing relief supplies and communications equipment to Bihac and Tuzla. In 1988, he served as an elder and deacon at the First Presbyterian Church, and founded the Friendship Center, a support center for the homeless. From 1965 to 1974, he was the project director for the Small Claims Study Group, sponsored by Ralph Nader. Dr. Weiss also founded the Caceres-Neuffer Genocide Action Group and has been a member of the Leadership Committee for Together for Ukraine and Ithaca Welcomes Refugees. He supports various anti-genocide groups, such as the Rescue James Madut initiative, and has volunteered as a teacher at the International Summer University.

Additionally, Dr. Weiss has an extensive portfolio of creative works, including producing the cable television series “Unity with Ukraine: A High Five from America” and the weekly cable television series “How to Spell Presbyterian.” He is the author of “The Making of Technological Man: The Social Origins of French Engineering Education” and “The Professions and the French State” and has produced over 100 documentaries for a local television channel. He also produced “How to Spell Presbyterian,” creating 130 programs, including the first American-made video on the Darfur genocide. He was the only American in contact during the Srebrenica massacre in July 1995 and the only unsponsored American to go to Bosnia between 1992 and 1995. 

In light of his impressive undertakings, Dr. Weiss has received various accolades. He was honored with an award from the University of Tuzla for his contributions to restoring the university’s international status after the war and genocide. He is a two-time recipient of the prestigious Peggy Award and has been recognized for his exceptional teaching and advising with several awards from Cornell University. He attributes his success to his parents, beliefs, and faith. In the coming years, he aims to continue his work in addressing significant international issues, with a focus on Ukraine, and continue developing his skills. He also looks forward to celebrate major milestones, such as spending his 25th wedding anniversary in the south of France.
