Alex Pothen, professor of computer science at Purdue University, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in academia and computer science.

With over four decades of experience Mr. Pothen excels in the industries of computer science and applied mathematics. He is currently a professor of computer science at Purdue University, a role he has held since 2008. In this role, he conducts research, publishes papers, teaches graduate and undergraduate courses, as well as organizing conferences, and serves as an editor for multiple journals and book series, including the Journal of the ACM, ACM Inc., the Journal on Scientific Computing, the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, and Optimization Methods and Software, as well as SIAM Review and the Journal on Scientific Computing. Additionally, he works with Old Dominion University, the University of Waterloo, The Pennsylvania State University. Other positions include being the director of the Institute for Combinatorial Scientific Computing and Petascale Simulations. 

Setting a solid foundation for his success, Mr. Pothen has maintained memberships with various organizations related to his areas of expertise. He is a member of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, and the American Mathematical Society. He is also on the editorial board of the Association for Computing Machinery Inc. and a founding chair of the Activity Group on Applied and Computational Discrete Algorithms. Setting a foundation for these successes, he earned a Master of Science in Chemistry from the Indian Institute of Technology in 1978, followed by a Master of Science in chemistry from Cornell University, culminating with a PhD in applied mathematics from the same institution. In light of his impressive undertakings, he was awarded as a fellow of the American Mathematical Society, a fellow at the Association for Computing Machinery, the George Pólya Prize in Applied Combinatorics from the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics and a fellow of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics.

In light of his impressive undertakings, Mr. Pothen has received several accomplishments and awards, including the George Pólya Prize in Applied Combinatorics from the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics in 2021. He has also been named a fellow of three prestigious societies: the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics in 2018, the Association for Computing Machinery in 2022, and the American Mathematical Society in 2024. He attributes his success to the guidance and support of his teachers, particularly his mother, who dedicated herself to his education. In the coming years, he plans to continue his research in computer science and applied mathematics with his students, aiming to improve lives through their work.
