Joseph Martinez, PhD, Retired Regents Professor at University of New Mexico College of Education, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in arts and sciences education.

Now retired following an esteemed career in the field of education, Dr. Martinez most recently excelled as a regents professor of graduate-level statistical analysis in the College of Education at the University of New Mexico between 1986 and 2012. He began his career as a teaching assistant in educational psychology within the Department of Educational Foundation at the  University of New Mexico from 1973 to 1978. He subsequently worked as the director of the reading laboratory at the University of Albuquerque from 1978 to 1979. During this time, Dr. Martinez was additionally active as a part-time instructor at the Albuquerque Extension of National College between 1976 and 1982.

From 1980 to 1982, Dr. Martinez was recruited by the University of New Mexico as a lecturer in psychology and educational foundations. He later served as an assistant professor of mathematics, education and psychology and the chair of the mathematics department at the University of Albuquerque between 1982 and 1985. Prior to his tenure as a regents professor, he provided his expertise to the Valencia Campus of the University of New Mexico as a professor of mathematics from 1985 to 1986. Before embarking upon his civilian career, Dr. Martinez enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, completing his service between 1964 and 1968.

To support his professional ambitions, Dr. Martinez pursued a formal education at the University of New Mexico, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology with a minor in English in 1973. He eventually concluded his academic efforts at the University of New Mexico in 1980, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy. Over the course of his formal studies, Dr. Martinez was inducted into The Phi Beta Kappa Society, the oldest academic honor society in the United States.

Dr. Martinez found much success with his written works as well, having co-authored “The Narrow Way Series” between 2012 and 2021. He has also contributed his wealth of knowledge to such publications as “Sharing Practices That Work” in 2011. Appointed as a book and manuscript reviewer for The Mathematics Teacher between 1989 and 2019, he also dedicated his time and resources to the editorial boards of the Journal of College Reading and Learning from 1984 to 1989 and The Explicator from 1988 to 1990. Dr. Martinez briefly expanded upon his versatile skill set as a media correspondent for The College Mathematics Journal between 1999 and 2000.

Dr. Martinez’s commitment to education extended beyond academia into civic engagement, as he has proudly donated to over 250 charitable organizations over the years. In recognition of his stellar accomplishments, he has been presented with more than 72 awards throughout his career, including multiple Merit Awards from the College of Education, a Certificate of Recognition from the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, and nominations for Outstanding Teacher of the Year and the Popejoy Dissertation Prize from the University of New Mexico. Notably, Dr. Martinez has been profiled in The New Yorker, Forbes Magazine, Fortune National, Wired Magazine, GQ, Vanity Fair, and The Wall Street Journal, to name a few.

Dr. Martinez has attributed his success to his faith in God, the unwavering support of his wife, Nancy, and his natural desire to give his all to every task. Among the many highlights of his career, he is incredibly proud of his award-nominated doctoral dissertation, which focused on speed-reading and the measurement of iconic read-out. Looking toward the future, Dr. Martinez hopes to publish more books while maintaining his health and intellectual curiosity in the coming years.
