Charles Patterson Scholes, PhD, President of the Board of Directors at The Siloé Project dba Pazapa, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in nonprofit administration.

An esteemed former educator, physical biochemist, and experimental physicist who has dedicated his time and attention to helping children with disabilities in Haiti, Dr. Scholes has excelled as the president of the board of directors for The Siloé Project dba Pazapa since 2010, having been associated with the nonprofit since 2008. In this position, he is responsible for communications and fundraising in support of the ordering and delivery of anti-seizure medication to Haitian children in need through the Pazapa Center for Children with Disabilities, Jacmel, Haiti. Moreover, Dr. Scholes aims to cement intergenerational sustainability for Pazapa so they may continue aiding others in the years to come. Dr. Scholes was motivated to support Pazapa in memory of his late son Jonathan E. Scholes, who worked there as a Peace Corps volunteer from 1996 to 1998.

Dr. Scholes began his career as an assistant professor of physics at the State University of New York in Albany from 1973 to 1978. He subsequently served in a number of educational posts at the aforementioned university between 1978 and 2017, including as an associate professor of physics, a professor of physics, and a professor of chemistry. Dr. Scholes would officially retire from his endeavors in the classroom at the State University of New York in Albany in 2017 upon the acceptance of the designation of professor emeritus.

Throughout his many years with the State University of New York in Albany, Dr. Scholes exhibited his talents as a pioneering researcher in the field of biophysics, with a particular focus on the applications of Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) to biological systems. His groundbreaking contributions to the field have garnered widespread acclaim and recognition, including a fellowship from the ESR/EPR Society and $6.5 million in grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Dr. Scholes has attributed his success to his ability to think outside the box and his pursuit of the roads less traveled.

Dr. Scholes initially embarked upon his professional path at Cornell University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in physics in 1964. He concluded his formal academic efforts at Yale University in 1969, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy in molecular biophysics. He would further refine his skill set with a postdoctoral research fellowship at the University of Oxford in 1970. Soon thereafter, Dr. Scholes completed a second postdoctoral research fellowship at the University of California San Diego in 1973.

Outside of his primary responsibilities, Dr. Scholes has been committed to making a positive impact on the world through his philanthropic endeavors. He has gone above and beyond to support the Community Coalition for Haiti, the Haitian Timoun Foundation, the Mohawk Hudson Land Conservancy, the YMCA, and his local Presbyterian church. He has likewise been affiliated with various organizations, including the American Chemical Society, the American Physical Society, the Biophysical Society, and the Hudson-Mohawk Road Runners Club. Inspired by his late son’s involvement with the Peace Corps, Dr. Scholes’ commitment to helping those less fortunate is fueled by a desire to honor his son’s memory and make a meaningful difference in the world.

Inspired by his parents, both of whom were biological scientists, Dr. Scholes harbored a lifelong interest in quantitative and experimental science, which fueled his accomplishments in the field of biophysics. Among his myriad achievements in all avenues of his career, he is incredibly proud of sustaining his nonprofit following the devastating earthquake in Haiti in 2010. Looking towards the future, Dr. Charles Patterson Scholes hopes to continue inspiring others through Pazapa while advancing scientific knowledge, promoting social good, and strengthening the long-term sustainability of The Siloé Project.
