He began his career as a budget analyst at Cooper Tire & Rubber Co. from 1976 to 1979. At Marathon Oil Co., he served as an economic analyst from 1980 to 1987, an economist from 1991 to 1994, a senior financial representative from 1994 to 1995, and a senior economist with Marathon Power Co. from 1995 to 1996. He worked as a research assistant at Texas Agricultural and Mechanical University from 1987 to 1991.
Dr. Vielhaber continued his career as a manager at LECG from 1996 to 1997. He garnered a stellar reputation as director of price forecasting at Tractebel from 1997 to 2000 and Capstone Global Energy from 2000 to 2004. He found success as an economist at Sowood Capital Management from 2004 to 2007 before transitioning to the role of director at Denham Capital Management LP from 2007 to 2016. At JPMorgan Chase & Co., he served as vice president from 2017 to 2018.
Before embarking on his professional path, Dr. Vielhaber pursued an education at the University of Toledo where he earned a Bachelor of Business Administration in 1976. He continued his academic efforts at Bowling Green State University, accruing a Master of Arts in economics in 1980. He concluded his studies at Texas A&M University, graduating with a PhD in 1991.
Beyond his responsibilities within the field, Dr. Vielhaber has participated in numerous endeavors outside of his professional circles. He provided services and efforts to the St. John Neumann Roman Church, the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, FedExFamilyHouse, and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. He found success as a contributor to The Energy Journal in 1994. In addition to his primary vocation, he remains affiliated with various organizations in relation to his areas of expertise. He was a member of the International Association for Energy Economists, Omicron Delta Epsilon, the International Economics Honor Society, and the Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity.
