Beginning as a senior social scientist at the RAND Corporation from 1992 to 2002, he conducted groundbreaking research on comprehensive school reform and school choice, laying the foundation for his impactful career.
Transitioning to academia, Dr. Berends held various positions of increasing responsibility, including associate professor of public policy and education at Vanderbilt University Peabody College from 2002 to 2009. Since 2009, he has been a professor of sociology and director of the Center for Research on Educational Opportunity at the University of Notre Dame, where he also served as associate vice president of research from 2020 to 2021. Currently, he holds the prestigious Hackett Family Director Institute for Educational Initiatives position at the University of Notre Dame, a testament to his leadership and expertise.
Throughout his career, Dr. Berends has received numerous accolades, including being elected as a fellow of the American Educational Research Association and National Academy of Education.
