Cyrus P. Olsen III, DPhil, associate professor at The University of Scranton, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in theology and religious studies.
With 17 years of experience to his credit, Dr. Olsen has excelled as associate professor at The University of Scranton since 2023. He began his career at The University of Scranton where he held a variety of positions including as a lecturer from 2006 to 2007, an assistant professor from 2007 to 2013, director and master of theological studies from 2009 to 2010, director of general education assessments from 2015 to 2018, associate professor from 2018 to 2022, co-director of the health humanities concentration from 2020 to 2021, and university fellow at the humanities center from 2021 to 2022.
Dr. Olsen continued his career by providing consulting services for thought leadership at Tuned to Cyrus, LLC since 2022. Concurrently, he garnered a stellar reputation as Lo Schiavo chair in Catholic social thought at the University of San Francisco from 2022 to 2023 and affiliate research fellow at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School for a the Templeton World Charity Foundation grant since 2022.
Before embarking on his professional path, Dr. Olsen pursued an education at University of Aberdeen as an exchange student of philosophy and religious studies in 1999. He continued his academic efforts at the University of Washington, obtaining a bachelor’s degree in the comparative history of ideas in 2001. He concluded his studies at the University of Oxford, graduating with a Master of Philosophy in 2003 and a PhD in theology in 2008. He is certified in ValueSelling framework for marketing professionals and in human subject research from the CITI Program.
Beyond his responsibilities within the field, Dr. Olsen has participated in numerous endeavors outside of his professional circles. He has presented at local high schools on science and religion. He found success as co-editor of the “Hermeneutics of Tradition” and contributed to articles in a professional journal. In addition to his primary vocation, he remains affiliated with various organizations in relation to his areas of expertise. He is a member of the African Studies Association and the American Academy of Religion.
In light of his impressive undertakings, Dr. Olsen has accrued several accolades throughout his career. He was presented with the Excellence in Advancing Interdisciplinary Study Award from The University of Scranton. He was selected for fellowships at Harvard Medical School, the Lonergan Institute of Boston College, the Center for Religion and Culture at Oxford, and the Gale and Francis Slattery Center for the Humanities at The University of Scranton. He was recognized as an endowed professor at the University of San Francisco, received a graduate studentship from University of Oxford and Theology, and was elected as campus representative by the Lilly Fellows Network at the Valparaiso University in the Humanities.
