Candice Castro, volunteer instructor at the Department of Hospital Education, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in education.
Dr. Castro’s educational journey began at the University of South Florida, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in natural sciences. She furthered her academic pursuits at the University of South Florida, obtaining a Doctor of Medicine in 1976 and completing her residency in general surgery in 1981. Embarking on a distinguished career, Dr. Castro served in the United States Army for 25 years as a medical doctor and general surgeon.
Dr. Castro’s extensive military tenure includes roles in Army medical centers, community hospitals, and field hospitals. Noteworthy deployments to Afghanistan in 2003 and Iraq in 2005 underscore her commitment to military medical service. Following her retirement in 2006, Dr. Castro transitioned into a rewarding role as a volunteer instructor for the Department of Hospital Education at Brooke Army Medical Center. Since 2007, she has been imparting knowledge in basic life support, advanced life support, and advanced trauma life support for the Army.
Beyond her professional pursuits, Dr. Castro engages in civic advocacy, volunteering for Catholic Charities, through which she teaches English as a second language to refugees and asylees from various regions globally. Affiliated with esteemed organizations such as the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, American College of Surgeons, Society of Army Physician Assistants, and Pi Alpha National Physician Assistant Honor Society Faculty, she continues to contribute to the medical community.
Reflecting on her achievements, Dr. Castro takes pride in her role as an educator, mentoring physician assistant students for 15 years and proctoring medical students and Special Forces medics during their hospital rotations. Her dedication to her field, coupled with support from students, patients, and colleagues, has been pivotal to her success. Looking ahead, Dr. Castro envisions a future involving continued volunteer work at Brooke Army Medical Center, guest instruction in physician assistant programs, and ongoing English teaching endeavors for Catholic Charities and the Archdiocese of San Antonio.
