Prof. Bethany Torres O’Brien, PhD, an assistant professor of psychology at Southeastern University, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in the field of psychology.

Hailing from over a decade of service in the field of education, Prof. Torres O’Brien has found success in her latest role as an assistant professor of psychology at Southeastern University, a private Christian university based in Lakeland, Florida. Bearing a particular focus on research regarding various religious and cultural approaches to coping and grieving, she has taught a number of courses on diagnosing, assessing and managing different cases, cognitive psychology, statistics, and adolescent development. Having initially joined the Southeastern University faculty in 2017, Prof. Torres O’Brien has also served in a similar capacity at Valencia College and Remington College. Furthermore, she has availed herself on behalf of students as a high school reading teacher in Polk County and, during an earlier period of her career, as a computer teacher at the Osceola School District. 

Outside of her work in education, Prof. Torres O’Brien has worked in various roles as a therapist, most recently at Meridian Behavioral Healthcare Inc., T.W. Ponessa & Associates Counseling Services and OMNI Health Services Inc. Other career-related pursuits to her credit include her work as a psychology instructor at Howard University. As a commitment to her field, she has also been active with several relevant organizations, including the American Psychological Association and the International Society of Political Psychology. She has also been closely involved with Enactus United States, a nonprofit organization that seeks to invest in the future success of students throughout America. 

Prof. Torres O’Brien initially studied psychology at Southeastern University, from which she earned a Bachelor of Science, cum laude, in 2012. Following this accomplishment, she went on to attain a master’s degree in professional counseling at Liberty University in 2015. She ultimately concluded her academic efforts at Grand Canyon University, where she received a Doctor of Philosophy in general psychology, with an emphasis on cognition and instruction, in 2021. 

Among her most notable achievements, Prof. Torres O’Brien is proud to have earned numerous academic awards, including recognition as an Outstanding Major in Psychology by Southeastern University in 2012, and as a listee on the Dean’s List. Recognizing her work on behalf of students with disabilities through Enactus, she was also hailed as the Member of the Month by SIFE (Students with Interrupted Formal Education).
