Brenda Fuller Orr, MEd, reading/writing interventionist at Houston ISD, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in elementary education.

With 54 years of experience to her credit, Ms. Orr excelled as a reading and writing interventionist at the Houston Independent School District, from which she retired in 2003. She began her career as a third-grade teacher at Bastian Elementary School from 1969 to 1971. She worked as a fourth-grade teacher at Hobby Elementary School from 1971 to 1973 and at Ed White Elementary School from 1973 to 1975. At Dodson Elementary and Montessori School, Ms. Orr served as math lead teacher and taught first through sixth-grade from 1975 to 1993. 

Ms. Orr contributed to the Houston Montessori Center as a teacher supervisor, test examiner, and presented classroom management techniques and organizational skills from 1980 to 1990. She continued her career teaching fourth grade at Grissom Elementary School from 1993 to 1998 and Windsor Village Elementary School from 1998 to 2003, after which she has established herself as an educational consultant in reading, writing, math and classroom management since 2003.

Before embarking on her professional path, Ms. Orr pursued an education at Paul Quinn College where she earned a Bachelor of Science in education in 1969. She continued her academic efforts at Tulane University, graduating with a Master of Education in 1979. She completed 15 hours of mid-management coursework at Texas Southern University in 1989. She holds an H.I.S.D. SIGHTS and Vanguard certification, an American Montessori Society certification for ages 6 through 12, and an H.I.S.D. – Crime Prevention and Drug Education certification.

Beyond her responsibilities within the field, Ms. Orr has participated in numerous endeavors outside of her professional circles. At the Shared Decision-Making Committee, she held the role of mentor teacher, grade chairperson of promotional activities, memory book coordinator, and science fair coordinator. She presented the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills writing strategies and the Testing as a Service outsourcing model, and in her youth was a Girl Scout leader. In addition to her primary vocation, she remains affiliated with various organizations in relation to her areas of expertise. She was a member of the National Educational Association, the Texas Classroom Teachers, the American Montessori Society, and the Texas Association for the Gifted and Talented.

In light of her impressive undertakings, Ms. Orr has accrued several accolades throughout her career. She was nominated for Teacher of the Year multiple times between 1998 and 2002 and was presented with a certificate of appreciation for her work between 1998 and 2001. She was recognized as teacher of the year by the Houston Independent School District, Grissom Elementary School, and Dodson Elementary School, and received five awards and recognitions for outstanding service as a teacher.
