Lisa A. Henkel, PhD, chief executive officer and founder at Pathways To Academic Excellence, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in educational development.
With 39 years of experience to her credit, Dr. Henkel has excelled as founder and chief executive officer at Pathways To Academic Excellence, a New York State-certified Minority and Women Owned Business, through which she has specialized in supporting educational leaders in the continual improvement change process offering leadership coaching in all areas of continual school improvement since 2012. During this time, she has been additionally active as an independent consultant supporting the New York State Department of Education, a post in which she operates as a school support partner coaching school leaders and leadership teams. Renowned for her effective, enthusiastic and differentiated approach based on the school and leader’s circumstances and current practices, Dr. Henkel contributed to the National Center for Time on Learning as senior director of school and district support and the International Center for Leadership in Education/Successful Practices Network as an educational coach.
Dr. Henkel previously worked as a teacher, principal, and superintendent with upstate New York school districts such as the North Colonie Central School District, the Voorheesville Central School District, and the Wynantskill Union Free School District. Over the course of her tenure in academia, she refined her skills in implementing and evaluating curriculum and instruction, making data-driven decisions, facilitating strategic planning, and budgeting with fiscal responsiveness. Likewise, Dr. Henkel found success with her dissertation, “Building Teacher Capacity: Staff Development, Socialization, and Receptivity to Change” in 2000.
Before embarking on her professional path, Dr. Henkel pursued an education at Plymouth State College, from which she he earned a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education in 1984. She continued her academic efforts and obtained a Master of Science in Educational Administration and Policy Studies. She eventually graduated from the University at Albany, part of the State University of New York system, with a PhD in Educational Administration and Policy Studies in 2000. In addition to these academic achievements, Dr. Henkel obtained her SDA, SAS and CAS certifications.
Beyond her responsibilities within the field, Dr. Henkel has participated in numerous endeavors outside of her professional circles. She has been notably affiliated with the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, and the UnboundEd Ecosystem. Additionally, Dr. Henkel was appointed as a trustee of the Board of Education for the Voorheesville Central School District as well as a member of the Board of Directors of the Voorheesville School and Community Foundation.
Attributing her success to her ability to build strong relationships, establish safe environments for discussing areas of improvement, and reflect on all experiences, Dr. Henkel has accrued several accolades throughout her career, including numerous Board of Education commendations. She also received a commendation from the school board in Meredith School District. She was named Outstanding Resident Assistant of the Year and selected for the President’s List. Furthermore, she has been incredibly proud to raise two wonderful young men, who have become Division I collegiate athletes, alongside her loving husband, David. In the coming years, Dr. Henkel intends to keep doing what she does with Pathways To Academic Excellence to see how far it can go and how much it can help.
