David Hackett Fischer, professor and historian at Brandeis University, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in the field of history.

Dr. Fischer has cultivated a fulfilling career in the field of historical academia, leveraging more than six decades of practiced expertise. Since 1971, he has served as an Earl Warren professor at Brandeis University, where he specializes in teaching history, humanities and liberal studies. He originally joined the institution in 1962 as a faculty member and has played a key role in guiding many students ever since. Adjacent to his primary duties, he has also maintained his position as a trustee of the College of the Atlantic since 2003. Over the course of his career, he has also excelled as a visiting professor at such colleges as the University of Waikato, the University of Otago, Oxford University and Harvard University. Dr. Fischer also remains active as a member of several industry-related organizations, including the American Historical Association, the Society of American Historians and the American Antiquarian Society.

Well-regarded for his scholarly output as well, Dr. Fischer has authored and edited many books throughout his time in the field, most recently including his 2022 work, “African Founders: How Enslaved People Expanded American Ideals.” Some of his other noteworthy titles include 2012’s “Fairness and Freedom,” 2011’s “Le Reve de Champlain,” and 2004’s “Washington’s Crossing.” As part of his vocational journey, he also pursued a formal education, ultimately achieving a Doctor of Laws at the University of Maine in 2014. To commemorate his achievement, Dr. Fischer was honored as a fellow of The Queen’s College in Oxford in 1985. Furthermore, he received the Pulitzer Prize for History in 2005.
