Virginia M. Lea, PhD, professor emerita at University of Wisconsin-Stout and Sonoma State University, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in the field of cultural studies.

Dr. Lea is a proven leader in the field of education, with more than 30 years of experience to her credit. Specializing in cultural studies, she previously served as a professor at the University of Wisconsin-Stout from 2010 to 2021, during which time she also founded the Hegemony Project. Today, she maintains the honorary title of professor emeritus at the institution, as well as at Sonoma State University, where she taught from 1998 to 2008. Originally from England, Dr. Lea was a high school teacher in Crawley for 10 years at the onset of her career. In her other academic endeavors, she founded the Educultural Foundation in 1993, and she remains affiliated with the American Educational Research Association and the National Association for Cultural Education. Dr. Lea is also well-regarded for her scholarly output, having authored and edited several books and papers, most recently including her 2018 work, “Critical Multicultural Perspectives on Whiteness: Views from the Past and Present.”

Prior to embarking on her vocational journey, Dr. Lea pursued her own formal education, beginning at the University of London and earning a Bachelor of Education in 1971. After fulfilling her initial teaching efforts, she subsequently immigrated to the United States in 1989 and continued her studies at San Francisco State University, where she received a master’s degree in multicultural education in 1995. She ultimately completed her studies at the University of California, Berkeley and achieved a PhD in social and cultural studies in education in 1998. To commemorate her academic achievements, Dr. Lea has been honored with several accolades, including an award from the American Educational Studies Association for her 2018 book. In light of her fulfilling career, she attributes much of her success to her ability to establish positive relationships with her students.
