Seth Woodard Norton, PhD, the Carl R. Hendrickson Professor of Business and Distinguished Chair at Wheaton College in Illinois, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in business and economics education.
A highly sought-after and decorated expert in his field, Dr. Norton teaches corporate finance and business strategy. His extensive published works, which include scientific papers, articles, and other research, have been cited more than 8,000 times. Receiving the most citations are his writings on economic freedom and growth, franchising, telecommunications, and government regulations. Dr. Norton garnered such respect as an authority after laying the groundwork for decades. He was awarded several relevant research fellowships, including one to study the effects of population growth on poverty and various environmental issues at the Poverty Environment Research Center in Montana.
Dr. Norton’s reach and influence have extended beyond academia to his work in antitrust law, consulting and appearing in legal proceedings as an expert witness for major corporations. Initially studying history like his father and brother, he was unexpectedly and deeply influenced in graduate school by a prominent African American professor who complimented his work, gave him direction, and completely changed his view of economics. This inspired the young master’s degree candidate to then refer to economics as “academic common sense.”
Between 1973 and the present, Dr. Norton has held numerous teaching or research positions at Wheaton College, the Illinois Institute of Technology, Illinois State University, the University of Michigan, Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, the Federal Energy Administration in Washington, D.C., and Triton College in River Grove, Illinois. He holds a PhD in economics and finance and a Master of Business Administration in finance and industrial relations from the University of Chicago, a Master of Arts in public policy and administration from the University of Wisconsin, and a Bachelor of Arts in history from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. Alongside his current academic duties, Dr. Norton is Wheaton College’s head wrestling coach, a well-earned position given his own athletic background. Prior to becoming an award-winning collegiate wrestler, he received a wrestling scholarship from Northwestern University after being inducted into the Palatine High School Athletic Hall of Fame.
