Eduardo Segarra, PhD, professor emeritus at Texas Tech University, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in resource economics education.

Drawing on more than 40 years of experience, Dr. Segarra is a proven leader in the field of education. Specializing in agricultural and resource economics, he served as a professor at Texas Tech University from 1987 until his recent retirement in 2020. Since 2021, he has maintained the honorary title of professor emeritus at the college. During his time with the institution, Dr. Segarra also operated as the chairman of the department of agricultural and applied economics from 2005 to 2013, a role in which he raised $17 million for research and endowment funds.

Prior to embarking on his vocational journey, Dr. Segarra pursued a formal education, originally earning a bachelor’s degree in economics at the Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León in Mexico in 1979. In his post-graduate studies, he attended the University of Missouri, where he worked as a teaching assistant from 1980 to 1982 and received a Master of Science in agricultural economics in 1982. He ultimately achieved a PhD in agricultural and applied economics at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in 1986. Prior to joining Texas Tech University, Dr. Segarra excelled as a visiting scholar for economic research service within the United States Department of Agriculture between 1986 and 1987.

As part of his commitment to his profession, Dr. Segarra formerly served as the president of the Southern Agricultural Economics Association (SAEA). Furthermore, he remains active as a delegate for the International Association of Agricultural Economists. Well-regarded for his accomplishments in the field, the SAEA previously honored Dr. Segarra with a Lifetime Achievement Award. In his civic-minded endeavors, he has participated in various food production programs in Africa, primarily in Tanzania and Ethiopia. Likewise, Dr. Segarra has volunteered in a great deal of irrigation system work in Texas.

In light of his fulfilling career, Dr. Segarra has largely attributed his success to his parents, who instilled in him the importance of hard work. Additionally, he is immensely grateful for the support of his wife and his two sons, who have helped him accomplish many things in his field. Accounting for his achievements, he is particularly proud to have seen many of his students find success in their respective careers. Looking to the future, Dr. Segarra hopes to continue having an impact on the lives of others through his civil work.
