Ava Russell, EdD, Associate Professor at Western Texas College, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in education.
With decades of experience to her credit, Dr. Russell has excelled as an associate professor with Western Texas College since 2005. In addition to this position, she was appointed by the aforementioned college as the division chair for adjunct instructors. She was previously active as a high school mathematics teacher with the Ralls Independent School District. A member of the Texas Community College Teachers Association, Dr. Russell had formerly worked for the Coca-Cola Bottling Company for five years.
Notably, Dr. Russell and her husband, James, purchased 160 acres of her grandfather’s farm after inheriting some of his property upon his passing in 1992. Naming the farm Ammaco Orchard after their children, they have since grown peanuts and cotton on their property. In the decades since, Ammaco Orchard has been a family operation, which her father, Isice, had worked on prior to his passing.
Before embarking on her professional path, Dr. Russell initially pursued an education at South Plains College, from which he earned an associate degree in computer programming. She continued her academic efforts with a Bachelor of Science in mathematics at The University of Texas Permian Basin in 1997. Dr. Russell concluded her studies at Texas Tech University, obtaining a master’s degree in mathematics education in 1999 before graduating with a Doctor of Education in higher education administration in 2008.
In light of her exceptional undertakings, Dr. Russell was presented with the Digging Deeper Award from Western Texas College in 2015. Attributing her success to God and the encouragement of her father, who was also her mentor, she is incredibly grateful for the path that God had set for her, including leading her to her farm and allowing her to touch the hearts and minds of thousands of students. Looking toward the future, Dr. Russell hopes to teach online and in an adjunct capacity for private and public colleges while dedicating her spare time to her grandchildren and advocating for people to pursue college later in life.
