Howard Joseph Cohn, independent author, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in the field of literature.

After gaining years of professional experience in the arts and education as a school teacher for more than thirty years in New York City Public Schools, Mr. Cohn retired in 2001. In addition to the fields of education, Mr. Cohn’s main interests lie in paleontology, as a fine artist and in writing.

Mr. Cohn’s interest in fossils began in the halls of the American Museum of Natural History, in New York City. At about the age of 7, he had his first hands on experience, after finding a rock with sea shell impressions on it, while visiting an aunt in Syracuse, New York. Twenty plus years later his interest was rekindled via introducing his children Miri, Michael and wife Susan to collecting fossils. A founding member of the New Jersey Paleontological Society, he honed his skills and knowledge working with, among others, Dave Parris of the New Jersey State Museum in Trenton and the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. In addition to building his private collection, Mr. Cohn assisted in digs for several other institutes of higher education and museums, including the Grand River Museum in Lemmon, South Dakota. He also continues his interest in education by mounting exhibits and visiting classrooms and speaking before groups in both public and private venues to pass on his knowledge concerning fossils.

An expert in his field of education, Mr. Cohn holds a B.A. and a M.A. from C.C.N.Y. in New York City and a M.F.A. in Printmaking from Lehman College, also in New York City. Artistically, he has won awards and his work has been exhibited in various galleries and museums. He continues to produce artwork.

Mr. Cohn’s love of history, travel and his inquisitive nature culminated in agreeing with his friend Bob Nesoff to collaborate in co-authoring a book on the history of Bergen County, New Jersey. This resulted in the publication of their book, “A History Lover’s Guide to Bergen County”, in 2022. The reader is taken on an informative, easy to read and historically significant tour of many sites throughout this county. After reading this book, the traveler to this area has been introduced to the importance and significance of places they have trod, often not knowing before, the history that rested under their feet. They will have gained a respect of the area and the importance it played in winning our independence. Mr. Cohn is considering writing a second book as a continuation of the many sites that could not be included in the first book, due to spacial shortcomings.
