Gerald “Jerry” Rick Potts, PhD, Adjunct Professor of Mechanical Engineering at The University of Akron, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in engineering education, vehicle dynamics and tire technology.

Since 1974, Dr. Potts has found success as an adjunct professor of
mechanical engineering at The University of Akron. He has also excelled as CEO and CTO of Test Measureent Systems, Inc. (TMSI) and now as Principal at GRP Dynamics, LLC. Potts is an expert in vehicle dynamics, instrumentation, vibrations and tire engineering. He is an accomplished professional with more than 55 years of experience to his credit.

Dr. Potts began his career as a petroleum engineer with Pan American Petroleum in 1966. He was an instructor of applied mechanics at Kansas State University from 1966 to 1970 and a research scientist with Firestone Central Research from 1970 to 1978. Among his positions, he garnered experience as an adjunct professor of mechanical engineering at the General Motors Institute, now Kettering University, and served as president of G.R. Potts Associates Inc. from 1983 to 1990. From 1991 to 2013, Dr. Potts was the president of Test Measurement Systems Inc.

Dr. Potts graduated from Wichita State University with a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering in 1966. In 1969, he obtained a Master of Science in mechanical engineering at Kansas State University where he also graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1970.

Dr. Potts holds multiple patents in his field and has been recognized for his accomplishments with the Fernley H. Banbury Award from the American Chemical Society in 2022. He received the Technology Lifetime Achievement Award from Tire Technology International in 2014 and the Standard Oil Company Outstanding Educator Award from Kansas State University in 1970. In 2020, Dr. Potts was the keynote speaker at the Tire Technology Expo in Hanover, Germany. He has also contributed articles to professional journals.

Once, while being interviewed by the editor of a technical journal Dr. Potts was asked, “In the 50 years teaching Tire Technology, have you changed the course over time to keep up with changes in tires?” To which he answered, “I like to think of it the other way around, that such changes in tires have occurred due to the teachings in our class! Yes, the class content has changed, that’s progress! In 50 years, graduates of our class now range from new recruits to senior management, so we have certainly affected the tire industry the world-over!” To keep abreast of his field, Dr. Potts was the president of the Tire Society from 2018 to 2020 and chairman of the ASTM Tire Committee from 1982 to 1986. He is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Sigma Xi, Phi Kappa Phi and Tau Beta Pi, among other organizations.
