James A. Hamilton, PhD, Professor at Boston University, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in biomedical research, cardiovascular disease and medical education.

Since 1978, Dr. Hamilton has found success as a professor at Boston University. In this capacity, he works primarily with the Boston University School of Medicine, conducting translational research on major diseases. Most recently, Dr. Hamilton’s newest research grant is on co-morbidity with cardiovascular disease and entails working with a team of infectious disease experts to develop new approaches to understanding COVID-19. He teaches graduate and undergraduate students, and collaborates with professionals in diverse specialties, including diabetes, liver disease and systemic inflammation.

In preparation for his career, Dr. Hamilton attended Juniata College and earned a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry in 1969. He continued his higher education at Indiana University Bloomington, graduating in 1974 with a Doctor of Philosophy in chemistry. Following his graduation, Dr. Hamilton worked for Indiana University Bloomington as an assistant professor of continuing education.

Among his published works, Dr. Hamilton co-authored “Lipid and Smooth Muscle Architectural Pathology in the Rabbit Atherosclerotic Vessel Wall Using Q-space Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance” in the Journal of Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance in 2022. He co-authored “CD36 Binds Oxidized Low-Density Lipoprotein in a Mechanism Dependent Upon Fatty Acid Binding” in the Journal of Biological Chemistry in 2015 and authored “Commentary on Fatty Acid Wars: The Diffusionists Versus the Translocatists” in Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology in 2014. Dr. Hamilton also founded Elucid Bio, the best imaging company on the market, which has grown to nearly $100 million in revenue. Elucid Bio uses computerized tomography angiograms, a non-invasive imaging test capable of predicting events 80% better than ultrasound imaging.

For his professional excellence, Dr. Hamilton received a grant to study pathways leading to statin risks for diabetes from Kowa Pharmaceuticals America in 2018. In 2015, he received a Distinguished Speaker of Chemical Engineering Award from Northeastern University, and in 2014, he became a fellow of the Obesity Society. In 2000, he earned the Avanti Lipid Award from the Biophysical Society, the highest international award for lipid biophysics. Dr. Hamilton enjoys music, gardening and traveling in his spare time. In the future, he hopes to expand his network of cardiology and diabetes experts willing to help with his research projects.
