Maxine Darlene Abeyta, physical education teacher for the Penasco Independent School District, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in education.
Since 1993, Ms. Abeyta has been a physical education teacher for the Penasco Independent School District. Throughout her time with the district, she has taught at the elementary, middle, and high school levels, and currently focuses on instructing students from kindergarten through eighth grade. In addition to leading six in-person classes per day, Ms. Abeyta is responsible for developing curriculum and instructional strategies to meet the needs of her students. Among other challenges, she recalls developing remote physical education curriculum to use with students during pandemic-related lockdowns, implementing age-appropriate multimedia resources and classroom management software for each grade level.
Ms. Abeyta holds a bachelor’s degree in human performance and sports from New Mexico Highlands University and has continued to pursue additional education and certifications throughout her career. She completed her Master’s degree in elementary education at the University of New Mexico in 2009, and she holds certifications to teach health, special education, and physical education in the state of New Mexico. Outside her work in the classroom, Ms. Abeyta is an athletic director and coach for volleyball, basketball, and track and field athletes.
Ms. Abeyta credits her success to her passion for teaching and her love for working with children. A former student athlete, she was inspired by her own coaches and teachers to pursue a career in education, and believes firmly that teaching is a true vocation. She is a member of the New Mexico High School Coaches Association and is proud to have been able to spend her career in the community in which she grew up. She looks forward to continuing to teach and remain a community leader in years to come.
