John Dean Freund, retired outdoor resource teacher from the Worthington City School District, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in environmental education.

With three-and-a-half decades of experience to his credit, Mr. Freund has cultivated a career of excellence in the field of education. Now retired, he previously taught as an outdoor resource teacher. During his time as a teacher, he specialized in creating curriculum for his students that focused on environmental education. Outside of his primary professional interests, Mr. Freund remains active as a member of the Fresno Bible Church, and he was previously a member of the National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association. As part of Mr. Freund’s work with Fresno Bible Church, he created the sentIN Ministry at Coshocton County Jail. Through this ministry, he delivers the Gospel to inmates at the jail and provides them with their own Bibles so they can further their religious studies and spiritual growth. 

As part of his career journey, Mr. Freund pursued a formal education at Ohio State University. During his time at the institution, he earned a Bachelor of Science in education in 1963 and a Master of Science in education in 1974. Furthermore, he pursued a Doctor of Philosophy in his field at the college, completing all but his dissertation toward the doctoral degree. Regardless of this, Mr. Freund has always asserted that degrees are not as important as curiosity, creativity and persistence.

In light of his success in the field, Mr. Freund has been acknowledged for his preparedness and ability to build upon his past experiences to assist in his teaching methodology. To wit, he hopes to be remembered for always putting the maximum effort into all of his endeavors. In his retirement, he continues to serve his community as a civic-minded citizen, volunteering with organizations such as 4-H and serving with the county jail noted above.

In light of his fulfilling career, Mr. Freund has largely attributed his success to his faith in God and the love and support of his parents. Accounting for his achievements, he is particularly proud of his jail ministry. In the coming years, Mr. Freund looks forward to continuing in his civil duties and enriching the lives of others.
