Dr. Erec S. Smith, PhD, Professor of Rhetoric at York College of Pennsylvania, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in literary education.

With many years of experience to his credit, Dr. Smith has excelled as an associate professor of rhetoric and composition at York College of Pennsylvania since 2013. The co-founder of Free Black Thought, a nonprofit organization that focuses on viewpoint diversity within Black America, he was previously active in an administrative position with Drew University and a faculty position with Temple University. Moreover, he has found success with his written works, having co-authored “The Lure of Disempowerment: Reclaiming Agency in the Age of CRT” for Kendall Hunt Publishing in 2022, authored both “A Critique of Anti-racism in Rhetoric and Composition: The Semblance of Empowerment” in 2021 and “Fat Tactics: The Rhetoric and Structure of the Fat Acceptance Movement” in 2020 for Lexington Books, and edited “The Making of Barack Obama: The Politics of Persuasion” for Parlor Press in 2013. As a testament to his exceptional efforts throughout his career, Dr. Smith was presented with the Hero of Intellectual Freedom Award from the American Council of Trustees and Alumni in 2022.

To support his professional endeavors, Dr. Smith pursued an education at Ursinus College, from which he earned a Bachelor of Arts in English with a minor in creative writing, cum laude, in 1996. He concluded his academic efforts  at the University of Illinois, Chicago, obtaining a Master of Arts in American literature in 1998 before graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy in rhetoric in 2003. Attributing his success to the events following his keynote address at the 2019 Conference on College Composition and Communication, he has been additionally motivated by his belief that he has something important to say in academia as well as the encouragement of a professor, Patty Schroeder. Moreover, he is incredibly proud of combating what he describes as “academic cancel culture” while finding more civil means of advancing social justice in academia through his writing. In the immediate future, Dr. Smith hopes to continue gaining traction for Free Black Thought through speaking engagements and assembling a support team while also launching an alternative institution for rhetoric, “Mutual Persuasion.”
