Robert E. Garfield, PhD, Professor at the University of Arizona and the Guangzhou Women & Children’s Medical Center, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in women’s health education.

Dr. Garfield has found success since 2015 as a professor with the University of Arizona. In addition, he has been a professor with the Guangzhou Women & Children’s Medical Center since 2013. Prior to these posts, he garnered experience as a professor at the St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center from 2008 to 2014. From 1991 to 2008, Dr. Garfield was the director of reproductive sciences and a professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. He was a full professor of obstetrics and gynecology at McMaster University from 1983 to 1991 and served the institution as an assistant and associate professor from 1974 to 1983.

In preparation for his career in women’s health, Dr. Garfield attended the University of Wyoming, earning a Bachelor of Science in zoology in 1967. In 1969, he graduated from the institution with a Master of Science in physiology. Dr. Garfield matriculated at the University of Alberta in Canada and earned a Doctor of Philosophy in pharmacology in 1973. He concluded his higher education with a postdoctoral fellowship in cell physiology at the University of Pennsylvania.

Dr. Garfield has found additional success through his written works, authoring “Uterine Concractility” in 1990, “Control of Uterine Contractility” in 1994 and “Basic Mechanisms Controlling Term and Preterm Birth” in 1994. He also contributed articles to more than 350 scientific papers in journals and medical publications on uterine contractility and uterine function. Among his accomplishments, Dr. Garfield holds many patents on instruments and treatments for preterm labor, hormone replacement therapy, contraception and preeclampsia. He is a member of the Society for Reproductive Investigation, the Romanian Academy of Medical Sciences, the Society for the Study of Reproduction and the Sigma Xi Scientific Research Honor Society. In the coming years, Dr. Garfield hopes to continue his research on the electrical activities of the uterus in women during pregnancy.
