Rebecca Markel, an educator at the Sylvan Center, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in the field of education.
Before retiring from the public school system, Ms. Markel found success through her role as an educator at the Vrain Valley School District in Longmont, Colorado. In this capacity, she assisted students in raising their reading scores toward the required level of proficiency for their grades, and has further offered her services as a tutor for those who struggle to read. Having joined Sylvan Learning, a supplemental learning organization, and Measured Progress, a nonprofit educational company, Ms. Markel is most proud to have helped dozens of students improve upon their linguistic and verbal development.
Before serving in the field of education, Ms. Markel earned a Bachelor of Science in medical technology from the University of Colorado Medical School in 1972. She subsequently received a certificate from the Paralegal Institute of Denver in 1984, whereupon she served as a medical malpractice litigation paralegal from 1984 until 1989. After switching her focus toward education, Ms. Markel attained a Master of Education at the University of Northern Colorado, and completed coursework in speech-language pathology at Pacific University.
Outside of her primary endeavors, Ms. Markel has distinguished herself as an author of children’s literature with “Lilly the Little Lava Mouse,” a book that has been translated into multiple languages. Looking toward the future, she hopes to continue publishing a wider array of short stories, including her planned “Charlotte Stories.” Professionally, Ms. Markel also aspires to consult on behalf of younger teachers.
