Alfred T. Spain, lecturer at The University of Nebraska at Kearney, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in aviation education.

Bolstered by over 50 years of experience, Mr. Spain is a leading expert in the field of education. Specializing in aviation and economics, he recently joined the Aviation Systems Management and Business Management Departments at the University of Nebraska at Kearney in 2021 as a lecturer. Mr. Spain originally began his career as an educator in 1971, operating as an instructor at Louisiana Tech University until 1972. A decorated veteran, he also honorably served in the United States Army from 1963 to 1970, maintaining the position of chief of flight evaluation on the east coast of the United States and operating in Vietnam and Germany at various points in his career. Prior to retiring from service, he achieved the rank of captain. In addition to his other professional accomplishments, Mr. Spain notably co-founded JetBlue Airways Corporation in 1998 and operated as the company’s senior vice president of operations until 2006.

Following the time of his military service, Mr. Spain pursued a formal education, beginning with his time at Louisiana Tech University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in aviation in 1972. He subsequently continued his studies at Concordia University in Montreal, Quebec, and received a Master of Business Administration in 1997, having already cultivated a wealth of experience in his field. Outside of his primary profession, Mr. Spain also remains active as a civic-minded citizen, volunteering with organizations such as the Joint Planning and Development Office in Washington D.C. To commemorate his achievements in the field, he was honored as a senior emeritus by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics in 2019 and with the Wright Bros Award from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration in 2013. For his military service, he received an Air Medal for Valor and a Purple Heart. Attributing much of his success to his caring nature towards others and positive attitude as a leader, Mr. Spain is most notably proud of all of his years as an aviator and educator, and he hopes to continue consulting and working with others in his field for many more years to come.
