Roland Hernandez, PhD, superintendent of schools of the Corpus Christi Independent School District, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in education administration.
With over 30 years of experience to his credit, Dr. Hernandez has cultivated a career of excellence as an administrator in the field of education. Since 2014, he has operated as the superintendent of schools for the Corpus Christi Independent School District. He originally joined the district in 2010 as the chief administrative officer. Dr. Hernandez previously served in several other superintendent roles in the Waco Independent School District from 2006 to 2010, the Tyler Independent School District from 2003 to 2006, and the Belton Independent School District between 2001 and 2002.
Adjacent to his primary professional endeavors as an educator, Dr. Hernandez is also the president of the Texas Urban Council. He is also an elected member of the legislative council of the University Interscholastic League. Additionally, to remain abreast of developments within his field, he remains affiliated with the executive council of the Texas Association of School Administrators. Outside of his educational work, Dr. Hernandez maintains his commitment to civic advocacy, having participated as a board member of the American Heart Association Inc.
Before embarking on his vocational journey, Dr. Hernandez pursued a formal education. He began his collegiate career at Texas State University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology in 1991. From 1997 to 1999, he continued his studies at the University of Houston-Clear Lake, ultimately receiving a master’s degree in educational administration. Dr. Hernandez concluded his academic pursuits at The University of Texas at Austin, where he achieved a Doctor of Philosophy in educational administration in 2001.
Well-regarded for his accomplishments in the field, Dr. Hernandez was named the Region 2 Superintendent of the Year and recognized among five finalists for Texas Superintendent of the Year in 2020. Attributing much of his success to the guidance of his mentors and leaders, as well as the support of his outstanding team, he is most notably proud of his role in making significant changes in his current school district, such as improving facilities and developing positive relationships between the schools and the community. Looking to the future, Dr. Hernandez hopes to continue serving as an administrator in the field of education for many more years, in addition to teaching at the doctoral level.
