Alfred S. Arkley, PhD, Professor Emeritus of Management at the University of Illinois Springfield, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in higher education.

Dr. Arkley prepared for his career in higher education at Harvard University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in government. He went on to study at Michigan State University, graduating with a master’s degree in political science and public administration, and later earned an additional master’s degree in international relations and African studies from Columbia University. Dr. Arkley concluded his higher education at Michigan State University, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy in political science in 1975.

Now retired, Dr. Arkley has held the designation of professor emeritus at the University of Illinois Springfield since 2001. He taught at the institution from 1977 to 2001 and previously spent five years with Western Washington University. Prior to his work in higher education, Dr. Arkley taught African history at a grammar school in Sierra Leone for two years.

Dr. Arkley has found success through his written works in addition to his teaching career. He has authored numerous published works, including “Slaver in Sierra Leone” and “Black Participants and White Subjects: The Relationship of Elementary School Racial Segregation to Fifth-Graders’ Political Orientations and Behavior.” For his accomplishments, he was named a Fulbright Professor in Lithuania in 2000 and earned a fellowship from the Federal Aviation Administration for two years.

Dr. Arkley attributes his success to his desire to make the world a better place. His interest in political science came from growing up in Bellevue, Washington, at the height of McCarthyism. Among his career achievements, he is especially proud of his work in management training. Dr. Arkley trained managers for the Illinois Department of Transportation using a training program he developed, and while completing his fellowship with the Federal Aviation Administration, he also designed and taught a program for air traffic controllers. He is also proud of his work documenting slavery in Sierra Leone. In his spare time, Dr. Arkley enjoys biking and reading.
