John Robert Strauch, ArtsD, Adjunct Professor of English at Illinois Central College, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in English education.

In preparation for his career in education, Prof. Strauch attended Concordia Teachers College, graduating in 1970 with a Bachelor of Science in education. He continued his higher education at Illinois State University, obtaining a Master of Science in English in 1975 and a Doctor of Arts degree in 1986. Prof. Strauch is a Certified English Teacher for grades six through 12 in the state of Illinois and earned a Lutheran Teacher’s Certificate from Concordia Teachers College in 1970. Since 1995, he has shared his knowledge as an adjunct professor of English at Illinois Central College, and from 1987 to 2004, he was a department chair of Washington High School District 308 in Illinois. Prof. Strauch began his career as a teacher at Lincoln College and served as an English teacher with Washington High School District 308 in 1970.

Alongside his primary professional experience, Prof. Strauch was a visiting team member with the Illinois State Board of Education from 1990 to 1994 and a chairman of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Washburn, Illinois, from 1993 to 1995. Since 1978, he has been a church organist. Prof. Strauch co-authored “Illinois Learning Standard for the English Language Arts K-12” from 2000 to 2002 and was the president and director of the National Council of Teachers of English in 2000. From 1980 to 2005, he was a member of the Illinois Association of Teachers of English. In recognition of his accomplishments, he was listed in the fifth edition of Who’s Who in American Education in 1995. Prof. Strauch attributes his success to his persistence and his professional mentors, including Dr. Maurice Scharton, his professor and dissertation adviser at Illinois State University, and Dr. Janice Neuleib, the executive director of the Illinois Association of Teachers of English. In the coming years, Prof. Strauch plans to continue teaching as long as he is still positively contributing to his students.
