James W. Carey, Chemistry Professor at Jack Yates High School with Houston ISD, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in education.
In preparation for his career pursuits, Mr. Carey attended the University of Miami, completing coursework in 1969. In 1974, he graduated from Texas College with a Bachelor of Science in biology, summa cum laude. He continued his higher education at Texas Southern University, earning a Master of Education in chemistry in 1977, and completed coursework at the University of Houston. Since 1980, Mr. Carey has worked as a chemistry professor at Jack Yates High School with the Houston Independent School District. Previously, he held the same position from 1974 to 1975.
Alongside his primary posts, Mr. Carey served for four years as an adjunct professor of anatomy at Texas Southern University. He was also an adjunct professor of environmental chemistry at the University of Texas for two years and was a former adjunct professor at the University of Houston. Mr. Carey has contributed as a volunteer with children and the homeless, and has been the recipient of service awards from his church and community. He is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha, the Alpha Kappa Mu Honor Society, and was the former president of the National Pan-Hellenic Council. In the coming years, he hopes to enter a well-deserved retirement and write about his past.
