Subhash C. Sarin, PhD, Paul T. Norton Endowed Professor at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in engineering education.

Since 1983, Dr. Sarin has found success as the Paul T. Norton endowed professor at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. He teaches in the university’s Grado Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering. Prior to his post at Virginia Tech, Dr. Sarin found success for four years as an educator with The Ohio State University. His areas of expertise include industrial engineering, sequencing and scheduling, logistics, and optimization.

In his current post, Dr. Sarin works with doctoral students, conducts research, and writes papers. He prepared for his career at the Delhi College of Engineering at Delhi University, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in engineering in 1970. He continued his higher education at Kansas State University, earning a Master of Science in industrial engineering in 1973. Dr. Sarin concluded his higher education at North Carolina State University, obtaining a Doctor of Philosophy in 1978.

Dr. Sarin attributes his success to his parents, who inspired him and instilled in him the importance of excelling in his endeavors. He became involved in his industry during his undergraduate education when he took a course about quality control. Through this class, he discovered the industrial engineering profession and applied for a master’s program in the United States, for which he was accepted. Among his career highlights, Dr. Sarin is proudest of his work in optimization, including developing algorithms for specific problems such as scheduling.

For his accomplishments, Dr. Sarin has been recognized with numerous awards and accolades throughout his career. He received the Outstanding Mentor Award from the Virginia Tech College of Engineering in 2020, the Hind Rattan Award from the NRI Welfare Society of India in 2019, the Mahatma Gandhi Samman Award in 2019, and the Dean’s Award for Excellence in Research from the Virginia Tech College of Engineering in 2017. Dr. Sarin also earned the Best Paper Award at multiple conferences and the Alumni Award for Excellence in Graduate Advising from Virginia Tech in 2013, among further honors.

In the coming years, Dr. Sarin hopes to continue working with students. In addition, he aims to write a book about mentoring, address issues in his home country of India, and obtain a Fulbright scholarship. He enjoys reading and listening to music in his spare time.
