Kirk L. Peterson, MD, Emeritus Professor of Medicine at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in health care education.
In preparation for his career pursuits, Dr. Peterson attended Stanford University where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in 1960. He continued his education at Cornell University, earning a Doctor of Medicine in 1963. With decades of experience to his credit, he has held the post of emeritus professor of medicine at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine since 2009, previously serving the institution’s Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory as director from 2009 to 2020.
Dr. Peterson began his medical career as a research fellow at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine in 1970, where he would go on to serve until his retirement. He additionally garnered experience with the University of Geneva in Switzerland, the University of Lausanne in Switzerland, the University of California Teaching Hospital, and in private practice. From 1970 to 2020, Dr. Peterson offered his expertise as a private practice physician in San Diego, California.
In addition to his primary endeavors, Dr. Peterson was an elder with the Presbyterian church, the director of fundraising for the University of California San Diego Cardiovascular Center, and has maintained affiliation with the American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology. He is a fellow of both the latter organization and the American College of Physicians. Among his career accomplishments, he was an endowed chair at the University of California San Diego for 25 years.
Dr. Peterson attributes his success to his close colleague and mentor, Dr. John Ross Jr., a distinguished cardiologist at the University of California San Diego. He became involved in his industry because of his innate interest in relieving others of disease, which he finds enormously satisfying. In his spare time, Dr. Peterson enjoys traveling, gardening, physical activity, publishing articles, and helping his friends access quality health care. In the coming years, he hopes to spend as much time as he can with his wife and family.
