Lane Clifford McGaughy, PhD, author and professor emeritus at Willamette University, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in religious studies.

With over six decades of experience to his credit, Dr. McGaughy has excelled in the fields of theology and religious studies. Having previously taught as the Atkinson professor of religious and ethical studies at Willamette University from 1981 to 2007, he currently holds the honorable title of professor emeritus. In 2011, he co-founded the Westar Institute, where he continues to operate on the board of directors. He began his career in 1963, serving as an assistant minister at the Morristown United Methodist Church in New Jersey until 1965, prior to joining the University of Montana as an assistant and associate professor from 1969 until 1981. In honor of his performance in the field, Dr. McGaughy was previously recognized with the United Methodist Distinguished Teaching Award.

Before embarking on his vocational journey, Dr. McGaughy cultivated his own education. After earning a Bachelor of Arts in religion and English at Ohio Wesleyan University and a Bachelor of Divinity at the Drew Theological Seminary, he subsequently achieved both a Master of Arts and a Doctor of Philosophy in theology and divinity at Vanderbilt University, having studied there between 1966 and 1969. As part of his professional dedication, Dr. McGaughy also remains affiliated with the Society of Biblical Literature and the American Academy of Religion. In addition to his accomplishments in the field, he is also well regarded for his creative output, having published several papers and co-authored “The Authentic Papers of Paul” in 2010. Having taught countless students over the course of his career, Dr. McGaughy is notably proud to have helped in reshaping the curriculum of his program.
