Robert E. Lee, Retired Band Director at Little River Public Schools, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in music education.
An award-winning musician and instructor who has achieved more than four decades of professional experience, Mr. Lee flourished as a music teacher and band director at a number of schools and clubs and as a percussionist for a variety of bands and orchestras. From 1961 until 2015, he performed as a percussionist in the Wichita Symphony Orchestra. He also was a music teacher at Little River Public Schools between 2002 and 2005, in Hutchinson Public Schools from 2000 to 2001, and with Haven Public Schools from 1967 until 2000. Moreover, Mr. Lee served as a percussion instructor at Friends University between 1965 and 1967 and as a music teacher with Goddard Public Schools from 1963 to 1967. He additionally shared his expertise as a percussion instructor at Hutchinson Community College and Wichita State University.
Mr. Lee earned a master’s degree in music education from Wichita State University in 1971. He previously obtained a bachelor’s degree in music education from the same institution in 1963. Notably, he also completed coursework at Fort Hays State University and Kansas State University.
A widely respected expert in his field, Mr. Lee was inducted into the Kansas Music Educators Association Hall of Fame in 2007 and into the Kansas Teachers’ Hall of Fame in 2005. Earlier, he received the Outstanding Bandmaster Award from the Kansas Bandmasters Association and Phi Beta Mu in 1997. A lifetime member of the National Association for Music Education, he maintained memberships in a wide assortment of influential music educator groups and associations to stay attuned to developments in the industry.
Still actively teaching small instrumental groups in his community, Mr. Lee takes considerable pride in having created quality musical ensembles and in helping incorporate music into his students’ lives. Many of the individuals he has taught and mentored play music professionally.
