Douglas C. Munski, PhD, Professor and Chairman of the University of North Dakota’s Department of Geography, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in geography education.

Since 1978, Dr. Munski has found success with the University of North Dakota’s Department of Geography. From 1999 to 2001, he served as the department chair, and since 2020 he has resumed this role at the institution. Dr. Munski’s area of expertise is human geography and world regional geography. In his current posts, he handles 100- and 200-level essential studies courses, as well as courses on human geography, regional geography, and the geography of North America.

In preparation for his career pursuits, Dr. Munski attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in education and geography in 1974. He continued his education with a Master of Arts in geography and a minor in urban planning from the same institution in 1975. Finally, Dr. Munski earned a Doctor of Philosophy in geography in 1978.

Dr. Munski has been recognized for his career achievements with multiple awards, including an Outstanding Course Development Award from the University of North Dakota in 2021. He also holds a National Teaching Award and a National Academic Advising Award. Dr. Munski considers his greatest career achievement to be his longevity, as he is now educating the grandchildren of students he taught in the late 1970s and early 1980s. His former students and their families have recommended his courses across generations.

Dr. Munski maintains involvement with the Northern Lights Council of the Boy Scouts of America and the Dakota Science Center, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that promotes science education. Previously, he was a commissioner of the Grand Forks Historic Preservation Commission and has been elected as a board member of the Grand Forks County Historical Society. Dr. Munski maintains affiliation with the Canadian Association of Geographers, the National Academic Advising Association, the National Council for Geographic Education, the American Association of Geographers, and the American Geographical Society. He attributes his success to his upbringing and education, and strives to see his students thrive in their career pursuits.
