A highly accomplished educator with expertise in music theory and composition, Mr. Halbstein teaches and conducts music with students of all age levels. He additionally provides after-school instruction to a student rock band and other pupils looking to improve their performance in classes related to music. He has excelled in his current role at Syosset High School since 2018. Previously, he served as a graduate assistant conductor and tenor section leader for the Nazareth College Chamber Singers from 2015 to 2018. He additionally worked in 2018 as an accompanist with Penfield Central School District and as a long-term substitute teacher at Caledonia-Mumford High School. Earlier, he thrived as a resident musical director and apprentice at Downstairs Cabaret Theatre from 2014 until 2017 and as the music director at Judah Community Fellowship Church from 2011 to 2012. Notably, he was vice president of the Student Government Association at Westminster Choir College from 2011 until 2012 and a  performance collection employee at the aforemention institution’s Talbott Library from 2008 to 2012.

Mr. Halbstein earned a master’s degree in music education from Nazarath College in 2017 and a Bachelor of Music in music theory and composition from Rider University in 2012. An outstanding student throughout his academic journey, he received the Graduate Conducting Award from Nazareth College and the Julianne and Bill Phillips Composition Award from Rider University. He additionally garnered special recognition in counterpoint and keyboard harmony from the European-American Music Alliance in Paris. While completing his undergraduate studies at Rider University, he composed numerous choral music pieces, some of which were premiered by ensembles at the institution.

Mr. Halbstein is passionate about advocating for curiosity in his classroom and regularly encourages his students to think more deeply about the content of their lessons, hoping to stimulate their ability to explore, discover and grow in the art of music. He believes that his success grew from his own inquisitiveness for understanding and communicating the language of music. His most notable achievement as a musical artist was hearing some of his original compositions performed by various choirs. As an educator, he considers the collective advancement of his students to be his greatest accomplishment.

Outside of his work with Syosset High School, Mr. Halbstein is working on a special music project that aims to promote self-awareness of prejudicial attitudes that people often do not realize they hold. He intends to return to his studies and pursue a doctorate of music. To stay attuned to developments in his field, he maintains a membership with the New York State School Music Association.
