Samuel K. Appavu, MD, FACS, FRCS(C), FCCM, FCCP, Professor Emeritus of Surgery and Surgical Specialties at the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Rockford, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in medicine education.

Strengthened by his 47 years of experience in medicine, Dr. Appavu holds extensive expertise in critical care and intensive care medicine and surgery of the liver, biliary tract, pancreas and endocrine organs. Since 2019, he has served as professor emeritus of surgery and surgical specialties in the Department of Surgery at the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Rockford. He began his long and illustrious tenure at the aforementioned institution as an assistant professor. He subsequently excelled as an associate professor from 1998 until 2003, and then as a professor of surgery and surgical specialties in the Department of Surgery from 2003 to 2019. Earlier in his professional career, he flourished as the division chairperson of Surgical Critical Care at Cook County Hospital. 

Dr. Appavu earned a bachelor’s degree from St. Joseph’s College in India in 1960, and an MD from Madras Medical College in India in 1966. He assiduously served an internship at Cook County Hospital from 1970 to 1971 and successfully completed a residency in surgery at Rush University Medical Center in 1973. To broaden his knowledge in his industry, he fulfilled a fellowship in hepatobiliary pancreatic and endocrine surgery at the Lahey Clinic Foundation. Moreover, he is a fellow of numerous other colleges, including the American College of Surgeons, Royal College of Surgeons of Canada, American College of Chest Physicians, and American College of Critical Care Medicine.

Widely respected for his contributions to his field, Dr. Appavu has presented his research findings around the world at events related to his field, including in the United States, Canada, France and India. He has held an Illinois State Medical License since 1973 and he is certified by the American Board of Surgery to perform surgery and practice surgical critical care.

Dr. Appavu received the Distinguished Faculty Award from the University of Illinois College of Medicine in 2017 and the Best Teacher Award from the same university, as well as a number of other rewards relating to his clinical research and presentations. Hard work is the main reason for the highly accomplished career of Dr. Appavu, whose most notable achievement was establishing the surgical critical care at the University of Illinois. He also prides himself on developing the program for intensive care medicine at the university. Devoted to mentoring future leaders in medicine, he wants to be remembered as a role model for quality patient management, clinical care, teaching, research and administration of his department.
