Sherman Leggett

Title: Band Director
Company: Capitol Middle School
Location:
Baton Rouge, Louisiana, United States

Sherman Leggett, Band Director at Capitol Middle School, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in music education.

A strong advocate for music education in schools, Mr. Leggett ensures that his students gain a full understanding of music, particularly knowing the motivation behind the creation of a musical piece. Having thrived as a music educator for 10 years, he is currently in his first year of teaching a band as a group for concerts at Capitol Middle School.

Prior to embarking on his professional journey, Mr. Leggett earned a bachelor’s degree in music education from the University of New Orleans in 2011. He is currently pursuing a master’s degree in wind band conducting at Messiah University. Dedicated to expanding his industry knowledge, he is a trumpet player and a member of the National Association for Music Education.

Becoming the band director of the American Legion Post 350’s band has been Mr. Leggett’s most notable accomplishment. Director of the performance group for the last 10 years, he has spearheaded its transformation from a pop band into a distinguished concert band.

Mr. Leggett was inspired to become involved in his profession by the dedication of his high school band director Karen Matthews. He attributes his success to his malleability and a willingness to make changes to the learning environment in order to improve student performance outcomes. In the future, Mr. Leggett hopes to teach at the college level and will look to pursue a doctorate. He wants to be remembered as a person who expanded the way his students view the world.
