Michael W. Kirst, PhD, professor emeritus at Stanford University, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in collegiate academics.

Well regarded for his professional longevity, Dr. Kirst cultivated a fulfilling career as a professor of education, teaching students at Stanford University in California from 1969 to 2007. Prior to joining the university, he began his career 1964 working within the U.S. federal government, holding several positions from then until 1969. To wit, he operated as the budget examiner of the U.S Budget Bureau, an associate director of the White House Fellows, the director of program planning and evaluation for the Bureau of Elementary and Secondary Education, and a staff director for the U.S. Subcommittee of Manpower. Since retiring from teaching, Dr. Kirst holds the title of professor emeritus at Stanford University. He is also recognized as the longest serving president of the California State Board of Education, having served in the role from 1977 to 1981 and between 2011 and 2019.

Prior to embarking on his vocational journey, Dr. Kirst pursued his own formal education. Over the course of his academic career, he earned a Bachelor of Arts, summa cum laude, at Dartmouth College in 1961, as well as a Master of Public Administration and a PhD in political economy at Harvard University in 1963 and 1964, respectively. As part of his dedication in the field, Dr. Kirst has also remained affiliated with several industry-related organizations, including the Learning Policy Institute in Palo Alto, California, the American Education Research Association, and the International Academy of Education. Known also for his creative output, Dr. Kirst has authored and edited a number of literary works, including “Remaking College: The Changing Ecology of Higher Education,” “The Political Dynamics of American Education,” and “Higher Education and Silicon Valley: Connected but Conflicted,” the latter of which was most recently published in 2017. Though he originally intended to dedicate himself fully to politics, Dr. Kirst found much to admire and enjoy as an educator, and he is proud to have developed a proven track record for making firm and equitable decisions in the field of education.
