Winston Barnett, Mathematics Teacher at Bushwick Leaders’ High School for Academic Excellence, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in elementary mathematics education.

After originally obtaining an associate degree with the Port Antonio Technical Institute in Jamaica, Mr. Barnett immigrated to the United States and subsequently earned a Bachelor of Science in business from Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn in 2000 and a Master of Science in elementary school mathematics from Brooklyn College in 2004.

From 1970 to 1990, Mr. Barnett provided superior service as a waiter in the hotel department of the luxury Cunard Cruise Line. Following serving as a senior citizen specialist with the New York City Department for the Aging, where he was bestowed with several certificates of thanks in honor of his legal work and crime prevention workshops, Mr. Barnett entered academia as a high school mathematics teacher with the New York City Department of Education in 2002. He provided superior education with Middle School 267 for three years, Frederick Douglas Academy for five years and then with Bushwick Leaders’ High School for Academic Excellence since 2020, where he instructs in algebra and geometry. 

An avid participant in community affairs, Mr. Barnett serves on behalf of the Arbor Day Foundation, the National Association of Black Accountants and National Geographic Society and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. In addition, he is a charter member of the National Museum of African American History and Culture and participates in his Community Board 17 and 67th Precinct Council Meetings. In 2003, he was honored with an Exemplary Community Service Award from Assemblyman Nick Perry for his work in the community. Mr. Barnett also received a Certification of Appreciation for Dedicated Service from the Medgar Evers College Alumni Association Inc. in 2006 and 2007.

Mr. Barnett attributes his success to hard work, dedication, determination, and his strong faith. As a career highlight, he cites assisting his students pass regional examinations and seeing them excel in mathematics. In the coming years, Mr. Barnett is hoping to be able to help others as much as he can. His ultimate goal is to see his students succeed, return to their community and try to help others and encourage younger children to prosper in school as they did.
