Abdulaziz Sachedina, Professor of Islamic Studies at George Mason University, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in religious studies and bioethics.

Hailing from Tanzania, Dr. Sachedina initially obtained Bachelors of Art from Aligarh Muslim University in India and Ferdowsi University of Mashhad in Iran. He subsequently earned a Master of Arts in 1973 and a PhD in Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies from the University of Toronto in 1976. He excelled as an English language instructor with Jorjani Nursing School in Mashhad, Iran from 1968 to 1971, as a research assistant with the Department of Middle East and Islamic Studies with the University of Toronto from 1971 to 1972 and a visiting lecturer in the department of religion and culture at Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, Ontario from 1975 to 1976.

Dr. Sachedina provided superior education as a professor in religious and Islamic studies, Islamic theology, law and ethics, Islamic biomedical ethics, Islam and human rights, Islam and democracy and religious pluralism with the University of Virginia in Charlottseville, Virginia from 1976 to 2002. In addition, he prospered as a visiting professor with the University of Jordan in Amman, Jordan in 1986, a Margaret Gest Visiting Professor of Religion at Haverford College in Haverford, Pennsylvania from 1987 to 1988 and a visiting professor at the Institute of Islamic Studies at McGill University in Montreal in 1993. 

From 2005 to the present, Dr. Sachedina has thrived as distinguished professor of bioethics with the Behishti University of Medical Sciences in Tehran, Iran and since 2013 as Professor and Endowed IIIT Chair in Islamic Studies at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia. Additionally, he served as an advisor for the drafting of the Constitution of Iraq in 2005, a consultant in the Virginia Department of Military Affairs and a consultant for the United States Department of Defense. Among his published works are “Islamic Biomedical Ethics Principles and Application,” by the Oxford University Press and “Islam and the Challenge of Human Rights,” both by Oxford University Press in 2009.

Dr. Sachedina’s unapologetic stance on issues in militancy and religion has played a crucial role in his success, and he is known for his candor and willingness to speak the truth. He is proudest of his work in ethics, and as a visiting professor in Iran and Iraq, he increased articulation of ethical issues. In the coming years, Dr. Sachedina will continue teaching and sharing his ideas with the world through his books. Apart from publishing another work on Islamic ethics, which he considers as a groundbreaking study, he is writing a novel based on his biography.
