Wanda Dennis, Special Educator at Prince George’s County Public Schools, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in developing special education programs.

After obtaining a Bachelor of Science in vocational evaluation and transition from The George Washington University (GWU) in Washington, Ms. Dennis subsequently earned a Bachelor of Science in special education from the University of the District of Columbia in 1982. She later continued her education with a Master of Arts in vocational rehabilitation from GWU in 2004. In addition, she is a licensed cosmetologist in Maryland.

Following providing superior service as a teacher in an elementary school for eight years, Ms. Dennis joined the Prince George’s County Public Schools in Maryland, where she excelled as a special education itinerant resource teacher from 2000 to 2008 and then as special education department chair from 2008 to the present. There, her responsibilities include the development and implementation of the individualized education program (IEP) of all students and ensuring that her coworkers have the support that they need to effectively do their jobs. In addition, she teaches Grades 6, 7 and 8.

According to Ms. Dennis, her career highlight was when an eighth-grade student of hers asked her for accommodation to take an examination. She was proud of him because during the course of his years in her classroom, he had come to embrace his maturity, IEP, and disability and she realized she had done a good job to make him feel comfortable. Attributing her success to great mentors, Ms. Dennis plans to retire after 35 years in special education and become a job coach with rehabilitation services.
