With more than 50 years of experience to his credit, Dr. Litt has been designated as professor emeritus at the University of California San Francisco since 2022. Moreover, he has excelled as an anesthesiologist at the University of California San Francisco Medical Center since 1982. During this time, Dr. Litt was additionally active at the aforementioned university as a professor in anesthesia and radiology from 1992 to 2022, a member of the UCB/UCSF bioengineering intercampus graduate group from 1983 to 2022, a member of the biophysics faculty group from 1990 to 1997 and an associate staff member at the Cardiovascular Research Institute from 1986 to 1997.

Furthermore, Dr. Litt worked at the University of California San Francisco as an assistant professor in residence in anesthesia from 1983 to 1988, an assistant professor in residence in radiology from 1985 to 1988 and an associate professor in residence in anesthesia and radiology from 1988 to 1992. He previously served as an assistant professor of physics at Michigan State University from 1974 to 1977 and an assistant professor of anesthesia at Stanford Medicine from 1982 to 1983. Dr. Litt began his career as a postdoctoral research assistant at The Rockefeller University from 1971 to 1973.

Before embarking on his professional path, Dr. Litt pursued an education at Columbia College, from which he obtained a Bachelor of Arts in physics, magna cum laude, in 1963. He continued his formal academic efforts with a fellowship at the Brandeis Summer Institute in Theoretical Physics in 1964, a Master of Arts at Harvard University in 1964, a fellowship in neurophysiology at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in 1971 and a Doctor of Philosophy in physics at the Harvard University Graduate School of Arts and Sciences in 1971. After completing a postdoctoral research fellowship at The Rockefeller University in 1974, he concluded his studies at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, graduating with a Doctor of Medicine in 1979. Following these accomplishments, Dr. Litt refined his skills through an internship in medicine at the University of Miami Affiliated Hospitals from 1979 to 1980 and a residency in anesthesia at the University of California San Francisco Affiliated Hospitals from 1980 to 1982.

Beyond his primary responsibilities, Dr. Litt contributed to CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, as a visiting scientist between 1971 and 1973. A prolific lecturer in his field, he has also found success with his written works, having authored articles that have been published in periodicals such as Pediatric Research, the Journal of Clinical Neuroscience, Neurochemistry International, the American Journal of Physiology and Annals of Internal Medicine, to name only a few. A fellow of the American College of Physicians and the American Physical Society, Dr. Litt has been presented with a number of New Investigator Awards and grants from the National Institutes of Health.

A lifelong experimentalist, Dr. Litt rose from humble beginnings who fondly recalls the opportunities provided to him in order to expand upon his wealth of knowledge, including his acceptance in several esteemed educational programs with the National Institutes of Health and Columbia University. Likewise, he is proud to have been mentored by such respected figures in his disciplines as Dr. James Watson, Dr. Edward Purcell, Frank Dixon, Dr. William Hamilton, Dr. Ronald Miller and Dr. Kmram Samii. Looking toward the future, Dr. Litt hopes to complete and publish a seven-chapter book chronicling his experiences as an anesthesiologist.
