Brenda Butler, Gifted and Talented Teacher Specialist at San Marcos Consolidated Independent School District, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in teaching and educational administration.
Since 1975, Ms. Butler has provided superior education as a Gifted and Talented Teacher Specialist with the San Marcos Consolidated Independent School District (CISD). In this capacity, she provides gifted and talented students she has identified with appropriate learning experiences that develop potential and lead to advanced academic achievement.
Ms. Butler initially obtained a Bachelor of Science in elementary education from Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas in 1971. She later completed postgraduate coursework in geography for teachers in 1989 as well as economics and economic education in 1985 from Texas State. Ms. Butler began her teaching career with the Lone Star Elementary School in New Braunfels from 1971 to 1974 and with Bowie Elementary School in the San Marcos CISD from 1974 to 1978.
Ms. Butler subsequently taught gifted students with Travis Elementary School from 1978 to 1987, language arts and social studies with Lamar Personalized Learning Center from 1987 to 1993, Hernandez Elementary School from 1993 to 2009, Mendez Elementary School from 2009 to 2014 and Crockett Elementary School from 2014 to 2019.
A seven-time recipient of the Teacher of the Month Award from Crockett Elementary School, San Marcos CISD, Ms. Butler has garnered numerous honors during her teaching career that include the National Citizenship Education Regional Teacher Post Recognition Award, Distinguished Alumni Award and Elementary Teacher of the Year from the San Marcos CISD, Teacher of the Year from Mendez Elementary School, Citizenship Education Award Teacher of the Year from Hernandez Elementary School and many more.
Ms. Butler is also an avid historian and has served as vice president of the local chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas. She has also volunteered for the American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, with the Walk for Life Cancer Drive and for various school related community activities Including Adopt-A-School, festivals and competitions and as a science fair coordinator with the Hernandez, Mendez and Crockett elementary schools.
Ms. Butler attributes her success to her mother, who always told her that she could do anything that she wanted to do and to just keep on going, as well as superintendents and principals, who gave her free rein. When she was an elementary school student, one of her teachers, Catherine Wiegand, was a particular inspiration, teaching her about Native American life. She considers her most notable achievement seeing children’s faces every time they learn something new.
Now retired from full-time teaching, Ms. Butler’s goal in the coming years is to volunteer in reading classes. She also aims to open up her own program where she can provide special experiences for the students where they are having fun while learning.
